A nuclear reactor that uses gas as a coolant to cool the core. Typical types use graphite as a neutron moderator, and carbon dioxide or helium as the coolant gas. The world's first nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile, was also a gas-cooled reactor cooled by air. Carbon dioxide-cooled types include the Magnox reactor (Calder Hall reactor), which uses fuel rods made of natural uranium metal clad in Magnox (a magnesium alloy), the improved gas-cooled reactor AGR, and helium-cooled types include the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor.

炉心を冷やす冷却材として気体を使う原子炉。中性子の減速材として黒鉛を使い，冷却材の気体としては炭酸ガス (二酸化炭素) ，ヘリウムを使うものが代表的である。世界最初の原子炉であるシカゴパイルも空気で冷却するガス冷却炉だった。炭酸ガス冷却型には，天然ウラン金属をマグノックス (マグネシウム合金) で被覆した燃料棒を使うマグノックス型炉 (コールダーホール型原子炉 ) ，それを改良した改良型ガス冷却炉 AGR，ヘリウム冷却型には高温ガス冷却炉がある。
