Issendai - Issendai

Japanese:
Issendai - Issendai

A Buddhist term. It is a transliteration of the Sanskrit icchantika. It is transliterated as Issenteika and abbreviated as 'Chanchi'. The original meaning is "a person who desires fame, profit and culture," but it is translated as "extreme desire," "one who has no faith," or "one who has rejected good deeds," and refers to a person who does not have the cause to become a Buddha. There are two types: Danzenchanchi, who lack the cause to attain liberation, and Daihichanchi (or Bodhisattvachanchi), who is a bodhisattva who exercises great compassion to save all living beings and intentionally does not attain enlightenment. They are also sometimes divided into usho-ntachi, who are unable to attain Buddhahood for a while but can do so through the power of the Buddha, and musho-ntachi, who can never attain Buddhahood.
