Corregidor (English spelling)

Japanese: コレヒドール(英語表記)corregidor
Corregidor (English spelling)
Local administrators in Spain and Spanish American colonies. They were generally in charge of the administration and judiciary of a certain area (corregimiento) for a term of three to five years. There were two types of corregidors: the corregidor de indios, appointed by the viceroy, the colony's highest administrative officer, who lived in the indigenous towns and supervised matters related to the indigenous peoples, and the corregidor de español, appointed by the king, who lived in the towns of Spanish colonists and supervised the town halls. The corregidors in particular wielded great power and often carried out oppressive acts, so in the 18th century the system of royal inspectors was established.
