Teacher

Japanese: 教師 - きょうし
Teacher
〘noun〙① A person who teaches academic subjects at a school etc. A person who teaches academic subjects, arts and crafts. A master. A teacher. A sensei. ※Kyō-hen (1783), vol. 4, “There are many doors to becoming a teacher (kyōshi). ” ※Ukigumo (1887-89), Futabatei Shimei, vol. 2, “An English teacher at a certain school.” ② A person whose job is religious education. A religious leader. A missionary. A missionary. ※Nihon Boeki Shimbun, April 17, 1863 (Bunkyū 3), “The family of a United States consul and teachers residing in Kanagawa.” [Glossary] (1) In China, it appears in Yuan dynasty and Ming dynasty vernacular novels, but it seems that it mainly meant a person who taught technology or martial arts, and had a low social status.
(2) In Japan, the term was used to refer to people who taught Confucianism during the Edo period, but came to refer to school teachers in the Meiji period. This is related to the start of the school system, but it may also be due to the influence of Chinese Western learning and dictionaries, which meant missionaries.

(2)日本では、江戸期に儒学を教える人を指す例が見えるが、明治期に入ってから、学校の教員を指すようになる。これは、学校制度の発足と関係があるが、宣教師の意とする中国の洋学、辞書の影響も考えられる。
