Washimiya [town] - Washimiya
An old town in Kitakatsushika County, northeastern Saitama Prefecture. It occupies the alluvial lowlands of the ancient Tone River basin. The central settlement developed as a temple town and market town for Washinomiya Shrine. The Tobu Isesaki Line runs through the town. Rice is the main crop, but strawberries, pears, and vegetables are also produced. Industrial production, such as steel and electrical parts manufacturing, has increased, and residential development is also progressing. In March 2010, it merged with Kuki City, Shobu Town in Minamisaitama County, and Kurihashi Town in Kitakatsushika County. 13.90 km2 . Population: 34,062 (2005).
