An old town in Kitakatsushika County, northeastern Saitama Prefecture. It occupies the alluvial lowlands of the ancient Tone River basin. The central settlement developed as a temple town and market town for Washinomiya Shrine. The Tobu Isesaki Line runs through the town. Rice is the main crop, but strawberries, pears, and vegetables are also produced. Industrial production, such as steel and electrical parts manufacturing, has increased, and residential development is also progressing. In March 2010, it merged with Kuki City, Shobu Town in Minamisaitama County, and Kurihashi Town in Kitakatsushika County. 13.90 km2 . Population: 34,062 (2005). 埼玉県北東部,北葛飾(きたかつしか)郡の旧町。古(ふる)利根川流域の沖積低地を占める。中心集落は鷲宮神社の門前町,市場町として発達。東武伊勢崎線が通じる。米作を主とし,イチゴ,ナシ,野菜も産する。鉄鋼関係,電気部品製造などの工業の生産が増大し,宅地化も進んでいる。2010年3月久喜市,南埼玉郡菖蒲町,北葛飾郡栗橋町と合併。13.90km2。3万4062人(2005)。
