...The one-volume edition of Great Tang Western Region Search for the Law, written by Yijing in the Tang Dynasty, is a biographie of over 60 monks who went to India from China to search for the law. Although it is not called a biographie of a great monk, the Liang Dynasty's Biography of Bhikkuni, which includes the deeds of nuns, may also be considered a kind of biographie of a great monk. The 106-volume edition of Monk's Biography of Paiyun written by Gojo (1640-95) in Japan, which serves as a comprehensive index of 48 kinds of Chinese monk biographies including the Great Monk's Biography, lists a brief biography under each monk's entry, and also indicates the title and volume in which the biography is found, making it reliable. In particular, the edition included in the Complete Collection of Buddhist Literature in Great Japan has an alphabetical index at the end of the volume, making it convenient even for those who are not familiar with rhymes.
