Sanuki no Suke Nikki - Sanuki no Suke Nikki

A diary from the late Heian period. Two volumes. The author, Sanuki no Naishi, was the daughter and eldest son of Fujiwara no Akitsuna. She was the fourth-generation grandson of Michitsuna no Haha, the author of "Kagero Nikki." Her elder sister, Kaneko, was the wet nurse of Emperor Horikawa, and through this connection she entered the service of the emperor and became a Naishi. After the death of Emperor Horikawa in 1107 (Kasho 2), she continued to serve his son, Emperor Toba. It is said that in her later years, she made prophecies, claiming to have been possessed by the spirit of Emperor Horikawa (Choshu-ki), and some even point out that she had the characteristics of a shrine maiden. The first volume of "Sanuki no Naishi Nikki" covers the period from June 20th, when Emperor Horikawa fell ill, until his death on July 19th, and vividly depicts the Emperor facing death as an individual, and the author's feelings of anxiety and grief as she stood beside him. The second volume is mainly about the period from October of that year to the following year (Tennin 1), and includes stories of the author, who re-entered the service of Emperor Toba, occasionally recalling their past days at the same court, and her inner affection for Emperor Horikawa is becoming more and more purified. Perhaps the social barrenness of the love relationship between a man and a woman, hidden behind the master-servant relationship between the Emperor and the Naishi, creates the unique sensationalism and romanticization in each of the first and second volumes. The first volume was probably completed after the Emperor's death, in the latter half of 1107, and the second volume around 1109. The Catalog of Books of Japan lists it as having three volumes, so some suggest that it was left out somewhere between the first and second volumes, or after the second volume.

平安後期の日記。上下2巻。作者讃岐典侍は藤原顕綱(あきつな)の女(むすめ)、長子。『蜻蛉(かげろう)日記』の著者道綱母(みちつなのはは)の4代の孫。姉兼子が堀河(ほりかわ)帝の乳母(うば)で、その縁によってか同帝に出仕、典侍(てんじ)となる。1107年（嘉承2）堀河帝崩御ののち、さらに皇子の鳥羽(とば)帝に仕える。晩年堀河帝の御霊(ごりょう)がのりうつったと称して予言を口走ったと伝えられ（長秋記）、彼女の巫女(みこ)的性格を指摘する説もあるほどであるが、『讃岐典侍日記』上巻には、その堀河帝発病の6月20日から7月19日崩御までが記され、一個の人間として死に直面した天皇の姿と、傍らにあって不安と悲嘆を肌で感じている作者の思いとを、すさまじいまでに描き出す。下巻は、同年10月から翌08年（天仁1）の記事が中心で、鳥羽帝に再出仕した作者が、おりに触れて同じ宮中の昔のことを思い出すさまがあわせて語られ、彼女の内部で堀河帝への慕情がますます浄化されていく。おそらく天皇と典侍という主従の立場の裏に隠れた男女の愛情関係の社会的な不毛性が、上・下巻それぞれの特異な感覚化と美化を生み出しているのであろう。上巻は崩御後、1107年後半、下巻は09年ごろ成立か。『本朝書籍目録(ほんちょうしょじゃくもくろく)』に3巻とあり、上・下巻の間、あるいは下巻のあとに脱落を想定する説もある。
