These are medieval and early modern documents held by the head temple of Daitokuji Temple (Kyoto City), the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. They include documents from the Heian and Kamakura periods that came in as tetsugi and related documents, but mainly consist of documents from after the founding of Daitokuji Temple in 1324 (Shochu 1). Apart from documents related to the succession law and temple regulations, such as gesho (poems), inka-sho (certificates of approval), and wall inscriptions jointly signed by the chief priests and various pagoda masters, most of the documents are litigation documents, donation letters, and sales certificates related to land and manors that Daitokuji Temple acquired from the central and local governments, making them of great value in research into the legal and economic history of the late Middle Ages. Also, in keeping with the Zen style of Ringe, who spread his teachings widely throughout the country, the collection features documents issued by local samurai families such as Akamatsu, Ouchi, Kono, Asakura, Shiba, and Oda. A total of about 3,400 medieval documents have been published as "Dai Nihon Komonjo: Kawake 17."
