The task of exchange theory (foreign exchange theory) is to elucidate the mechanism behind the determination of exchange rates and their fluctuations. Under a freely floating exchange rate system, exchange rates are determined to balance demand and supply in the foreign exchange market, and when the state of demand or supply changes, the exchange rate fluctuates. When considering the demand and supply for foreign exchange (for example, dollars), it is important to distinguish whether to consider them as a flow amount per certain period of time or as a stock amount at a point in time.

為替理論(外国為替理論)の課題は，為替相場の決定とその変動のメカニズムを解明することである。自由変動為替相場制のもとでは，外国為替市場の需要と供給を均衡させるように為替相場が決定され，需要あるいは供給の状態が変化するとき，為替相場は変動する。外国為替(たとえばドル)に対する需要･供給について考えるとき，それらを一定期間あたりのフロー量として考えるか，一時点のストック量として考えるかを区別することが重要である。
