Emperor Tenchi

Japanese: 天智天皇 - てんじてんのう
Emperor Tenchi
An ancient emperor. His name was Nakano Oe. He was the son of Emperor Jomei. In 645, he conspired with Nakatomi Kamatari and others to destroy Soga no Emishi and Iruka, and established a new government. In January of the following year, he issued the Taika Reforms, and thereafter, as the crown prince of Emperor Kokutoku, he carried out domestic reforms. Even after Empress Saimei re-enthroned in 655, he continued to control the government as the crown prince, and sent a relief force to Baekje in response to a request from the country, but was defeated by the Tang and Silla forces in the Battle of Baekgang in 663, and withdrew from Korea. In 667, he moved the capital to Otsu in Omi (Omi-Otsu Palace), and ascended to the throne the following year, remaining on the throne until 671. He established the Omi Code and compiled the Kogo Nenjaku (Year of the Horse Year Register). In 671, he appointed his eldest son, Prince Otomo, as Grand Minister of State, and died while worrying about the actions of his younger brother, Prince Oama. His grave is in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City (Emperor Tenchi's Yamashina Mausoleum). There is a poem about it in the Manyoshu. → Jinshin War → Related topics Awazu Hashimoto Mikuriya | Isshi Incident | Omi Court | Minister | Gamōno | Emperor Genmei | Emperor Kōnin | Yamashiro | Prince Shiki | Establishment | Takayasu Castle | Nukata no Okimi | Elegy | Fujiwara Kamatari | Yamashina
