Tokyo Metropolitan University

Currently Tokyo Metropolitan University. A comprehensive university established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1949 (Showa 24) based on six schools: Tokyo Metropolitan High School, Tokyo Metropolitan Technical College, Tokyo Metropolitan Chemical Industrial College, Tokyo Metropolitan Science and Engineering College, Tokyo Metropolitan Women's College, and Tokyo Metropolitan Mechanical Engineering College. In 2005 (Heisei 17), it was merged with Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Science and Technology, Tokyo Metropolitan College of Health Sciences, and Tokyo Metropolitan Junior College to form the Tokyo Metropolitan University Corporation, and became a university operated by Tokyo Metropolitan University. Tokyo Metropolitan University stopped accepting new students and closed in March 2011. When it was first established, it had three faculties: Humanities, Science, and Engineering. In 1957, the Faculty of Law and Economics was separated from the Faculty of Humanities, and in 1966, the Faculty of Law and Economics was separated into the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics, respectively, so that by 2005, there were five faculties. Each faculty had a first and second division (5-year program), but the second division stopped accepting students from the 2005 academic year. There was a graduate school consisting of the humanities, social sciences, science, engineering, and urban science departments (master's and doctoral courses). Its distinctive features include a small number of students compared to the number of professors, and an emphasis on urban-related research. It also housed the Makino Herbarium (established in 1958), which holds approximately 380,000 plant specimens, and the Urban Research Institute (established as the Urban Research Center in 1977). Both are now facilities of Tokyo Metropolitan University.
