Sakura is an old town in Shioya County in central eastern Tochigi Prefecture. It occupies the hilly area of the Arakawa and Egawa River basins, tributaries of the Naka River. The city center has flourished as a castle town since the end of the Middle Ages, and as a post town on the Oshu Kaido road since early modern times. Rice is the main crop, but the town also cultivates fruit and vegetables. In March 2005, it merged with Ujiie Town in Shioya County to become a city, named Sakura City. Area: 75.47 km2 . 栃木県中東部,塩谷(しおや)郡の旧町。那珂(なか)川の支流荒川・江川流域の丘陵地を占める。中心市街は中世末以来城下町,近世以後は奥州街道の宿場町としても栄えた。米を主要作物とするが,果樹,野菜の栽培にも取り組んでいる。2005年3月塩谷郡氏家町と合併し市制,さくら市となる。75.47km2。1万1556人(2003)。
