Born: November 13, 1876 in Ashikaga [Died] June 13, 1947. Ashikaga folklorist. Real name Taroji. Graduated from Tokyo Senmon Gakko (now Waseda University). Worked as a newspaper reporter and editor while studying under Kunio Yanagita. He called his study historical folkloristics and conducted research using ancient documents. Using the vast number of cards he obtained from his reading, he compiled general histories on such themes as shrine maidens, the blind, prostitutes, marriage, and young people, and compiled a folkloristic dictionary on his own. For a long time, he was not highly regarded in the history of academic theory due to conflicts with Yanagita, whose theory was based on oral tradition, but in recent years his achievements are beginning to be recognized. His main works are Japanese Folkloristics (4 volumes, 1930-31), Japanese Folkloristic Dictionary (33), and History of the Blind in Japan (34).
