An Arabic word derived from the Latin Africa. In the early period of Arab conquest, this term referred to the whole of North Africa west of Libya. After the Aghlabid dynasty (800-909), it came to be limited to an area centered on Tunisia, including eastern Algeria and western Libya, corresponding to the territory of the dynasty that established power in Tunisia. It corresponds to the eastern part of the Maghreb. [Kisaichi Masatoshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
