An evergreen small tree of the Rutaceae family. Native to the Himalayan region, it is cultivated throughout Europe and America. It was introduced to Japan from China long ago, and is one of the world's major producers of neroli, along with Spain. It grows to a height of 2-3m, with distinct wings on the petioles. Its large, white, fragrant flowers are used to extract a fragrant oil called neroli oil. The fruit is orange and spherical, and does not have a navel or nipple at the top like navel oranges or lemons. It is a representative of the so-called sour orange family, and its flesh is very sour and bitter. In Japan, it has long been used as a New Year's decoration, and people make daidai vinegar and daidai soup to drink. In Europe and America, marmalade is made from the fruit. The dried peel is called daidai peel and is used as a stomachic ingredient. This species is also used as a rootstock for other citrus species.
