The leaves are alternate, lanceolate, 4-10 cm long, wedge-shaped at the base, with three prominent midribs and coarse sawtooth edges. The leaf surface feels rough. The top of the stem branches into a corymb and bears pale purple flower heads. It produces an achene with a long pappus. It is very similar to Yomena, but Yomena does not have a pappus. It is highly variable, and is divided into many varieties and subspecies by region. The Kondaiku, which is often cultivated for decorative purposes, is one variety of this species, with even more vivid flower colors.
