In addition, various other mechanisms have been proposed, including increased mechanical work on the respiratory muscles, abnormal excitation of the respiratory center, insufficient oxygen supply to the respiratory muscles, oxygen deficiency in arterial blood, excess carbon dioxide, and changes in blood chemistry such as blood acidification.
[Classification]
Dyspnea often appears and worsens with physical movement (dyspnea on exertion), but it can also occur even when the patient is still (dyspnea at rest). The more severe the dyspnea on exertion, the more likely it is that even the slightest physical movement will cause dyspnea, making it impossible to move. As such, the severity of dyspnea on exertion is divided into five levels, from 1 to 5, according to the degree of possible exercise, as shown in the table.
