Refining - Seiren

Japanese: 精練 - せいれん

Before dyeing fibers or their products, they are heated in an aqueous solution of detergent or alkali to remove resin, wax, fat, and other contaminants that have adhered to the surface and to remove the starch used in weaving in order to make the dyeing and finishing process go smoothly and to improve the finish. Silk that has had the sericin contained in it removed by scouring is called degummed silk.

繊維またはその製品を染色する前に，染色や仕上げ作業を順調にし仕上がりをよくするため，あらかじめ洗剤やアルカリの水溶液中で熱して，表面に付着した樹脂，蝋，脂肪などのよごれを除き，また織布のときに使ったのりを抜くこと。精練により生糸に含まれているセリシンを除いたものを練絹という。
