Japanese: サヤハシチドリ(鞘嘴千鳥) - サヤハシチドリ

A general term for birds in the Chionididae family, or one of these species. Birds in this family are about the size of a pigeon, with a total length of 36 to 43 cm. They have thick bodies and short necks. Their beaks are short and small, with a sheath-like appendage at the base that covers the nostrils, hence the name. Their legs are also short, thick, and strong. Their wings are relatively long and pointed, with short, horn-like protrusions on the wing corners. Their bodies are entirely white, with bare skin around the eyes. There are two species in the world, which are found on islands in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions.
