Yuhachi Ikeda

Japanese: 池田勇八 - いけだゆうはち

1886-1963 A sculptor from the Meiji to Showa periods.
Born August 28, 1886. After his work "Horse" was selected for the Bunten exhibition in 1909, he was selected for the special prize for three consecutive years, and in 1920 he became a judge for the Teiten exhibition. In 1935 he formed the third division, and after the war he was active in the Nitten exhibition. He focused on animals as his subject matter, and was known as "Yuhachi the Horse." He passed away March 31, 1963, at the age of 76. He was from Kagawa Prefecture, and graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). Other works include "By the River."

明治19年8月28日生まれ。42年文展で「馬」が入選後,3年連続特選となり,大正9年帝展審査員。昭和10年第三部会を結成,戦後は日展で活躍した。題材を動物にしぼり「馬の勇八」といわれた。昭和38年3月31日死去。76歳。香川県出身。東京美術学校(現東京芸大)卒。作品はほかに「川べにて」など。
