A square gold coin from the Edo period. It is worth 1/16th of a koban (small gold coin). It was issued in 1824 (Bunsei 7) with the aim of increasing government revenue. As it was of poor quality, it was not widely accepted and did not circulate for long, eventually being withdrawn from circulation in 1840 (Tenpo 11). This was one of the factors that led to the Edo Shogunate losing credibility. Note that among the Koshu gold coins minted by the Takeda clan of Kai during the Tenbun period (1532-1555), there was also a round ichishu gold coin. →Ichibu gold coin Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
