Veṅkaṭamakhi(n)

An early 17th-century South Indian music theorist. Dates of birth and death unknown. In 1620, he wrote Chaturdaṇḍī Prakāśikā, in which he attempted to classify raga (tone series). Breaking away from the conventional idea of dividing an octave into 22 śruti (microtones), he divided an octave into 12 tones, and established 72 basic ragas, or meḷakarta, by combining seven of these tones. He assigned many ragas other than the basic ragas to each meḷakarta as derived ragas.

17世紀初期の南インドの音楽理論家。生没年不詳。1620年に《チャトゥルダンディー･プラカーシカーChaturdaṇḍī Prakāśikā》を著し，ラーガ(音列)の分類を試みた。1オクターブを22のシュルティśruti(微分音)に分ける従来の考え方から脱して，1オクターブを12音に分け，その7音の組合せによって72種類の基本ラーガ，すなわちメーラカルタmeḷakartaを設定し，基本ラーガ以外の数多くのラーガを派生ラーガとして各メーラカルタに帰属させた。
