An old town in Ibusuki County, at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. Lake Ikeda is to the north, Mt. Kaimon is to the south, and the Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line runs through the center of the town, with the main settlement of Juccho. Sweet potatoes and tobacco are cultivated here. It is part of Kirishima-Yaku National Park (now Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park) and has become a tourist destination. 鹿児島県薩摩半島南端,揖宿(いぶすき)郡の旧町。北に池田湖,南に開聞岳があり,中部に指宿(いぶすき)枕崎線が通じ,主集落十町(じゅっちょう)がある。サツマイモ,葉タバコの栽培を営む。霧島屋久国立公園(現・霧島錦江湾国立公園)に属し観光地になっている。2006年1月揖宿郡山川町と指宿市へ編入。33.45km2。7208人(2003)。
