A butterfly belonging to the family Satyridae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. For a long time, it was thought that there was only one species of Neope found in Japan, but it has become clear that this was a confusion between two species that look very similar, and the Japanese name Kimadarahikage is no longer used academically. The two species are Satokimadarahikage Neope goschkevitschii and Yamakimadarahikage N. niphonica . Both species are found from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but in many parts of Japan, the former species generally lives in plains and low mountains, while the latter species lives in mountains, so the Japanese names mentioned above were given to them. The latter species is found on Rishiri Island, Sado Island, and Yaku Island, while the former species is not found there. The wingspan of both species is about 55 to 65 millimeters. Both species emerge once a year (July and August) in cold regions (for example the mountainous regions of Hokkaido), and twice a year (April to June and July to September) in warm regions. The larvae of both species feed on bamboos, but while Sasa grazers eat bamboo and bamboo grass, Sasa grazers mainly eat bamboo grass and have a narrower range of preferences. In some regions, Sasa grazers feed on Japanese silver grass, but Sasa grazers do not eat it. Both species overwinter as pupae. [Takashi Shiramizu] It is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and can be found in lowlands and hilly areas in the Kanto region and south. Wingspan is about 60 mm. The ones found in the Boso Peninsula are slightly smaller than those in other regions. Wing span is about 60 mm.
