Ironsi, A.

...Against this political turmoil, a military coup took place on January 15, 1966. Northern leaders such as A. Bello and Balewa were killed, and Igbo General Ironsi Aguiyi Ironsi (1934-1966) took power and attempted to reorganize the country into a unified state. However, immediately after the promulgation of the Federalism Abolition Act in May of that year, a large number of Igbo people living in the Northern Region were killed, and Ironsi was killed on July 29.
