The English word "party" means (1) a political party, a faction, (2) a group or group of people gathered for a certain purpose, and (3) a social gathering. In Japan, however, although there are also uses of (2) such as mountain climbing parties, it is used exclusively in the sense of (3). Some are held at turning points in the daily calendar, such as Christmas parties, wedding parties, and birthday parties, but most are held for the purpose of eating, drinking, and having fun together, completely unrelated to these. As seen in Alice in Wonderland (1865), where she is scolded for intruding on a tea party for the Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse, a party is basically something that is invited to a private occasion.
