Salvinia versicolor - Salvinia versicolor

An annual aquatic fern in the Salvinaceae family. Total length 7-10 cm. The stem is somewhat branched and has no roots. The leaves are arranged in whorls of three, with the two on the left and right that float on the water surface. These floating leaves are broadly elliptical in shape and resemble pepper leaves, hence the name. The remaining leaf on the bottom is submerged and at first glance appears to be divided into fine filaments like a root. Sporangia are found in cysts attached to the base of the submerged leaves, and the spores come in different sizes. They grow in colonies floating in rice paddies and ponds all over the country.

サンショウモ科の一年生水生シダ。全長7～10センチメートル。茎は多少分岐し、根はない。葉は3枚ずつ輪生し、うち左右の2枚は水面に浮かび、この浮水葉の形が広楕円(こうだえん)でサンショウの葉に似ていることからこの名がある。下側にある残りの1枚は水中に沈み、一見、根のように糸状体に細かく分かれる。胞子嚢(のう)は沈水葉の基部についている嚢果の中にあり、胞子には大小の区別がある。各地の水田や池沼に浮かび、群生する。
