A general term for the tribes that caused widespread chaos by fiercely attacking countries and cities in the eastern Mediterranean, including the Nile Delta of Egypt, Anatolia, Syria, and Palestine, from both land and sea from the 13th century BCE to the beginning of the 12th century BCE. This is said to be the reason for the complete lack of records from the Near East during this period. It is said that this caused the Hittite Empire to decline, and Egypt was attacked during the reigns of Merneptah and Ramses III. Some of the Bronze Age Greeks, navigators and pirates from Anatolia who were the ancestors of the Etruscans, tribes on the west coast of Anatolia, tribes on Sardinia, the Sicilians of Sicily, and the Philistines of the Bible, who are thought to have come from Crete, are said to be a branch of these "Sea Peoples."
