Caravans linking the ports of trade in the Indian Ocean located in Yemen and the Persian Gulf with Syria and Egypt were called the “seasonal large caravans qāfila al-mawsim,” and large formations of 1,000 to 5,000 camels were organized, and large markets were held in inland relay cities as the caravans passed through.
