…The distance traveled by a caravan in a day varied depending on the purpose and size of the formation, the terrain along the way, the season, and other conditions, but watering places, anchorages, and caravan sarais were established to accommodate the 6-10 hour daily travel distance. Caravans linking the ports of trade in the Indian Ocean located in Yemen and the Persian Gulf with Syria and Egypt were called the “seasonal large caravans qāfila al-mawsim,” and large formations of 1,000 to 5,000 camels were organized, and large markets were held in inland relay cities as the caravans passed through. Large caravans also arrived in Mecca and Medina from Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen in the months of pilgrimage (especially the months of Rajab and Dhu al-Hijjah). …
