East Asian Research Institute

Japanese: 東亜研究所 - とうあけんきゅうじょ

A research institute for Japan's national policy established under the Planning Agency in 1938. Its research system was large-scale, and it covered not only China but also the whole of Asia, including the Soviet Union, the Middle East, and the South, and the research topics were diverse, including natural sciences, society, economics, and politics. With ample operating funds, it was also active in conducting externally commissioned research. The research conducted by each department and group by region (many of which were translated) was compiled in such publications as the East Asia Research Institute Report and Materials, which included many unpublished materials. 1938年企画院のもとに設けられた日本の国策のための調査機関。調査体制は大規模なもので，中国のみならず，ソ連，中近東，南方などアジア全域を調査対象とし，調査テーマも自然科学，社会，経済，政治と多岐にわたり，豊富な運営資金による外部委嘱調査も盛んだった。地域別の各部各班の調査(翻訳も多い)は，《東亜研究所報》や非公刊のものを多く含む《資料》などにまとめられた。1945年解消。【原山煌】
