1912‐79 British countertenor. He was a member of the choir of Canterbury Cathedral from 1941 and St. Paul's Cathedral from 1947. In 1950, he founded the Deller Consort Vocal Ensemble, and made a great contribution to the revival of early music, especially in the performance of choral music from the 16th and 17th centuries, while also providing new interpretations. With a soft, high-pitched voice, many composers have written works for him, including Britten, who composed the part of Oberon in the opera A Midsummer Night's Dream (1960) for his voice.
