Proboscidea, Elephantidae. Body length 5.5-6.4m (including trunk), height 2.5-3m, weight about 5t. Its body is rounder than that of the African elephant, and its ears are smaller. It has a single finger-like projection at the end of its trunk. Females' tusks do not grow very long. They form herds of about 30 individuals, but the female is often the leader. They feed on grass, leaves, fruit, etc. The gestation period is about 21 months. Newborns weigh about 90kg and are about 1m tall at the shoulder. Four subspecies are known: the Indian elephant, the Ceylon elephant, the Malayan elephant, and the Sumatran elephant.
