1865‐1919 A Russian economist and socialist from the late Imperial period. Also known as Tugan Baranovsky. Born near Kharkov, Ukraine. He initially studied natural sciences and law, but later switched to economics. From 1895 onwards, he served as a lecturer at St. Petersburg University and as dean of the law faculty at Kiev University. In his first paper (1890), he introduced Böhm-Bawerk's marginal utility theory to Russia and attempted to synthesize it with the labor theory of value. In An Essay on the History of the English Depression (1894), he sought to locate the cause of depressions in disparities between industrial sectors, earning him the reputation of being "the father of modern business cycle theory."
