Year of death: 13th October 1623 (4th December 1623) Year of birth: 1568 He was the first European to travel to Ezochi. He was born in Sicily. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1586, came to Japan as a priest in 1602, and was assigned to the temple in Fushimi the following year. In 1613, he established a missionary station in Sunpu (Shizuoka City). In 1617, after the ban on Christianity, he was invited by Goto Juan to travel to Oshu Mibun (Mizusawa City, Iwate Prefecture) to comfort the exiled Christians of Tsugaru. In 1618, he traveled to Matsumae in Ezo and made his first report on Ezo Island. In 1619, he traveled again to Matsumae and visited the Christians at the gold mine at Sengen-dake in Matsumae, and at the request of Provincial Superior Pacheco, he created a 13-item report on Ezochi and a map, which was translated into various European countries. At the end of the same year, he turned to Edo for missionary work, and two years later he was martyred at Sadanotsuji in Edo together with Father Galves of the Franciscan Order.
