River Tweed

Japanese: トウィード[川]（英語表記）River Tweed

A river that flows through the Borders in southeastern Scotland, UK. It has a total length of 156 km and a drainage area of about 4,840 km2. It originates at Tweeds Well in the southern Scottish highlands, flows northeast to east, and joins with tributaries such as the Ettrick, Teviot, and Till before emptying into the North Sea. The upper reaches up to Melrose form a river valley, and are an area for extensive sheep farming. The woollen industry, famous for tweed weaving, developed in Galashiels, Selkirk, and other areas. The downstream section of about 27 km forms the border between Scotland and England, and the river mouth city of Berwick-upon-Tweed is on the English side.

イギリス，スコットランド南東部のボーダーズ州を流れる川。全長156km，流域面積約4840km2。スコットランド南部高地のトウィーズ･ウェルに源を発し，北東から東流，途中エトリック，ティービオット，ティルなどの支流を合わせ北海に注ぐ。メルローズまでの上流域は河谷を形成し，粗放的牧羊地帯となって，〈ツイード織〉で有名な毛織物工業がガラシールズ，セルカークなどで発達する。下流の約27kmはスコットランドとイングランドの境界線となり，河口都市ベリック･アポン･トウィードはイングランド側に属する。
