A river that flows through the Borders in southeastern Scotland, UK. It has a total length of 156 km and a drainage area of about 4,840 km2. It originates at Tweeds Well in the southern Scottish highlands, flows northeast to east, and joins with tributaries such as the Ettrick, Teviot, and Till before emptying into the North Sea. The upper reaches up to Melrose form a river valley, and are an area for extensive sheep farming. The woollen industry, famous for tweed weaving, developed in Galashiels, Selkirk, and other areas. The downstream section of about 27 km forms the border between Scotland and England, and the river mouth city of Berwick-upon-Tweed is on the English side.
