Rhyme diagram - Ins

Japanese: 韻図 - いんず

A collection of tables that arrange initial consonants horizontally and final syllables vertically, and organize Chinese syllables in a diagrammatic way through their combinations. Its origins are thought to date back to the Tang dynasty, but the following are representative examples that have been passed down to the present day. The Northern Song's Yunjing and Zheng Qiao's Qiyin Lue are the oldest and are closest to the system of cut-rhyme rhyming script. Next, those that reflect a more medieval system include the Shisheng Dengzi, the Qiyun Zhizhang Tu, thought to have been written in the Southern Song dynasty, and the Qiyun Liannan by Liu Jian of the Yuan dynasty. Even after that, newer rhyme diagrams were created that reflected the colloquial language of the time. The study of rhyme diagrams is called Dongrhymeology.

横に声母を，縦に韻母を配列し，その組合せにより中国語の音節を図式的に体系づけた表の集りをいう。その起源は唐代に始るとみられるが，今日に伝わる代表的なものに次のものがある。北宋の『韻鏡』や鄭樵 (ていしょう) の『七音略』は最古のもので，切韻系の韻書の体系に最も近い。次いで，より中世的体系を反映するものとして，『四声等子』，南宋の作とみられる『切韻指掌図』，元の劉鑑 (りゅうかん) の『切韻指南』などがある。その後も，当時の口語を反映する，より新しい韻図がつくられた。韻図を研究する学問を等韻学と称する。
