In Japan, methods similar to four of the eight types outlined by Nakata Kaoru above - fire, sacred water, boiling oil, and lottery - were used from ancient times to the early modern period. For example, fire divine trial was performed by having the victim hold a red-hot iron rod, sacred water divine trial was performed by having the victim remove a stone from boiling water, and lottery divine trial was also performed frequently. Other examples of divine trial performed in Japan include sanro kisho (making the victim stay in the shrine for a predetermined number of days, such as 2, 3, 7, or 14 days), mura kisho (making many villagers stay in the shrine at the same time), and rakushi kisho (making the criminal vote by anonymous doodles).

　日本においては，先に中田薫が整理した8種のうち，火，神水，沸油，抽籤の4種によく似た方法が古代から近世初頭にかけて行われている。例えば火神判は鉄火(灼熱した鉄棒を握らせる)，神水神判は神水起請（しんすいきしよう），沸油神判は盟神探湯（くかたち），湯起請(熱湯の中の石をとらせる)が類似のものであり，また抽籤神判にあたる鬮（くじ）とりもしばしば行われた。日本で行われた神判としては，このほか，参籠起請(2日，3日または7日，14日などあらかじめ決められた日数を社頭に参籠させる)，村起請(多数の村人をいっせいに参籠させることか)，落書（らくしよ）起請(無記名の落書で犯罪者を投票させる)などをあげることができる。…
