Okamoto Palace

The palace of both Emperor Jomei and Saimei. In 630 (the second year of Emperor Jomei's reign), Emperor Jomei built Okamoto Palace near Asuka Oka, but moved to Tanaka Palace after a fire in 636. In 656 (the second year of Emperor Saimei's reign), Emperor Saimei built the later Okamoto Palace on the site of Okamoto Palace and moved from Kawahara Palace, but it was also destroyed by fire in the same year. After his victory in the Jinshin War (672), Emperor Tenmu built Asuka Kiyomihara Palace south of Okamoto Palace and ascended to the throne. Regarding the location of Okamoto Palace, if we consider the location of Kiyomihara Palace to be around Asuka Elementary School, northwest of Asukadera Temple in Asuka, Takaichi County, Nara Prefecture, as is commonly believed, Okamoto Palace would be located to the north of it. However, there is also a theory that the ruins of the traditional Itabuki Palace south of Asukadera Temple correspond to Kiyomihara Palace, and future archaeological investigations are an issue to be addressed.

舒明(じょめい)・斉明(さいめい)両天皇の宮室。630年（舒明天皇2）舒明天皇は飛鳥(あすか)岡の傍らに岡本宮を営んだが、636年火災にあって田中宮に移った。斉明天皇は656年（斉明天皇2）岡本宮の故地に後(のちの)岡本宮を営んで川原宮より移ったが、同年火災にあっている。天武(てんむ)天皇は壬申(じんしん)の乱（672）の勝利後、岡本宮の南に飛鳥浄御原(きよみはら)宮を営んで即位した。なお岡本宮の位置については、浄御原宮の位置を、通説のように奈良県高市(たかいち)郡明日香(あすか)村飛鳥の飛鳥寺北西の飛鳥小学校周辺に考えると、岡本宮はその北方に位置することになる。しかし飛鳥寺南方の伝承板蓋(いたぶき)宮跡を浄御原宮にあてる説もあり、今後の考古学的調査が課題となっている。
