A feudal lord in the early modern period. Fudai. Said to be a branch of the Toki clan of the Seiwa Genji. There are various theories about the origins of Doi Toshikatsu, the ancestor of the Doi clan in the Edo period, but he served as a close attendant to Tokugawa Hidetada, who became the second shogun, and later became a senior councilor and then a chief advisor. In 1602 (Keicho 7), he was granted 10,000 koku in Omigawa, Shimousa, and this was gradually increased until in 1633 (Kan'ei 10), he was granted 160,000 koku in Koga, Shimousa. After Toshikatsu's death, his illegitimate sons Toshinaga and Toshifusa received their share of the land, and after Toshikatsu, Toshitaka, Toshishige, and Toshihisa were named, but Toshihisa died out as he had no children. However, due to Toshikatsu's achievements, Toshitaka's second son, Yoshimitsu, succeeded him as the head priest. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
