...The Mossi dynasty branched out into three major dynasties, the southern, central and northern, and various kingdoms of various sizes rose and fell as each dynasty split up, moved, or branched off from the others. In 1887-89, French soldier Louis Gustave Binger visited various parts of Upper Volta during an expedition from the Niger River to the Gulf of Guinea, and then in 1895-96, French troops led by Lieutenant Paul Voulet invaded Upper Volta, subjugated the Mossi king, and concluded an agreement for a protectorate. The Lobi people were then conquered in 1901, and the present area was incorporated into the French colony of Haut-Sénégal-Niger in 1904, but was unified as the colony of Upper Volta in 1919. ...
