Shahbandar (English spelling)

Japanese: シャーバンダル（英語表記）shāhbandar

It mainly refers to the person in charge of managing foreign merchant ships and foreign merchants residing in international trade ports in Southeast Asia, such as the Malacca Sultanate. In Persian, it means "King of the Port." Its origins are thought to date back to the 7th century, when Persian merchants began to advance into maritime trade in Southeast Asia. Usually, one person was placed in each port, and appointed as the elder of the foreign merchants residing there, to entertain and manage foreign merchant ships, collect taxes, and control the foreign merchants residing there, on behalf of the local authority.

主としてマラッカ王国など東南アジア地域の国際貿易港における外国商船，居留外国人商人の管理責任者を指す。ペルシア語で〈港の王〉を意味する。その起源は7世紀ころ，ペルシア商人が東南アジア方面の海上貿易に進出するようになった時期にさかのぼるものと思われる。通常，各港に1名おかれ，そこに居留する外国人商人の長老が任命され，土地の権力者に代わって外国商船の接待，管理，徴税，および居留外国人商人の統制にあたった。
