Tentsuki - Tentsuki

Japanese: テンツキ - てんつき
Tentsuki - Tentsuki

An annual or perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). 15-60 cm tall. Leaves are 1.5-4 mm wide and finely hairy. The inflorescence branches 2-3 times and produces spikelets 5-8 mm long at the end from summer to autumn. It grows on rice field ridges and riverside grasslands and is a pest in rice paddies. It is widely distributed throughout Japan and in tropical and temperate regions around the world, and there is a large degree of variation. The origin of the name is unknown.

The closely related water hyacinth F. littoralis Gaudich. ( F. miliacea (L.) Vahl) grows well in paddy fields and is a pest. The leaves are about 2 mm wide and hairless. The inflorescence is highly branched and produces spherical spikelets measuring 2 to 3 mm. It commonly grows on rice field ridges and riverside grasslands, and is widely distributed from Honshu to Kyushu and in the tropics. The name means "sunshine," and is said to come from the fact that it is resistant to drought.
