Small fishing boats common on the Hokuriku and San'in coasts. A few were also seen in the Seto Inland Sea and northwestern Kyushu. Most are made of five planks, 7-8m long and 1.2m wide at the shoulders. They are hand-rowed and have no sails. The meaning of the word "kanko" is unclear. In some places on the Pacific coast of western Japan, the "ikema" part of a fishing boat is called "kanko," and on the Sanriku coast, small hollowed-out boats are known as "kakko-bune."
