A fish of the mackerel family. Local names include magatsuo and katsu, and young fish are called tokkuri. It can reach a total length of 1m, but is usually caught at about 40 to 65cm. The body is spindle-shaped, with a dark blue dorsal side and a silvery white ventral side. Its color is unclear while alive, but 4 to 10 blue-black vertical stripes appear promptly after death. Distributed in warm seas around the world. In Japan, it is more common on the Pacific coast. In the Northern Hemisphere, it migrates northward in spring. It is a strong swimmer and can reach speeds of up to 100km per hour. It is caught by line fishing on katsuo fishing boats. Fresh fish is enjoyed as sashimi and other dishes, and is also consumed in large quantities as katsuobushi, namaribushi, and canned goods.
