〘名〙① 室町・江戸時代、大名、諸士、領民などに課せられた城郭・河川・道路の修築などの夫役(ぶやく)。※続撰清正記(1664)六「千石に十人出し、二月二日より十一月晦日迄、普請役致し候なり」② 江戸幕府の職名の一つ。享保九年(一七二四)より、勘定奉行支配下で勘定所御取箇方(おとりかがた)組頭の指揮のもとに、東海道五川、一五か国の幕府領の堤、川除(かわよけ)、用水などの普請箇所の検分・修築、新田の検分などをつかさどったもの。※地方凡例録(1794)七「新田手代を直に御ふしんやくに仰付られ」
