A publication is a record of oral presentations and lectures given at academic conferences and research meetings held by organizations such as academic societies. It is available in both serial and book form. It may be a pre-print that is submitted before the conference, or a full paper that is submitted after the conference. A distinctive feature of conference presentations is that there is a question-and-answer session with the conference participants, and a record of this may also be published. When it is in book form, it often takes a long time to publish. Conference proceedings are considered to be a representative example of grey literature, but indexes and bibliographic databases are being developed, and some make it possible to search for individual presentations. However, there are also proceedings of one-time conferences and proceedings that are published in institutional journals, so it is generally difficult to comprehensively search and obtain them.

学会などの団体が開催する学術的な内容を持つ会議，研究集会における口頭発表や講演などの記録を刊行したもの．逐次刊行物と単行書の双方の形態がある．また，会議前に提出された予稿を掲載する場合と，会議後にフルペーパーと呼ばれる論文を提出する場合とがある．会議参加者との質疑応答がある点が会議での発表の特色であり，質疑応答の記録も掲載されることがある．単行書の形態をとる場合，刊行には時間がかかることが多い．会議録は，灰色文献の代表とされているが，索引誌や書誌データベースが整備されつつあり，個々の発表を探索できるものもある．しかし，1回限りの会議の会議録や機関誌に掲載される会議録もあるので，網羅的な探索や入手には一般に困難が伴う．
