Font‐de‐Gaume (English spelling)

A site of Paleolithic cave paintings in the Dordogne department in southwestern France. The cave is 124 meters long along the Beune River, and the paintings begin 64 meters from the entrance. Investigated by Breuil and Peyronni in 1901, this marked the beginning of the discovery of Paleolithic art. In addition to 80 bison, horses, mammoths, deer, cattle, reindeer, goats, figures representing pitfalls, and handprints are depicted in color and engraving. Notable features are the relatively large number of mammoths and reindeer, which rarely appear in cave paintings, and the large number of animal figures that are both colored and engraved.

フランス南西部，ドルドーニュ県にある旧石器時代の洞窟壁画遣跡。ブーヌBeune川に沿う，長さ124mの洞窟で，壁画は入口から64mの所から始まる。1901年にブルイユとペイロニによって調査され，旧石器時代美術発見の端緒となった。80頭のビゾンのほか，馬，マンモス，鹿，牛，トナカイ，ヤギ，陥穽（かんせい）を表す図形，手形などが彩画および刻画で表されている。洞窟壁画にはまれにしか表れないマンモスやトナカイが比較的多いことと，彩画･刻画併用の動物像が多いことが特色である。
