Ichiro

Japanese: 一﨟 - いちろう

A term used to count the seniority of officials, with the oldest being called "ichi-san." The head of the sixth-rank kurōdo and the head of the Kamakura shogunate's duty staff were called "ichi-san," but by extension the term refers to someone who has gained seniority and become an elder (for example, see the entry for "adult"). In the field of performing arts, it refers to the highest-ranking role among dancers in gagaku bugaku and azuma asobi, as well as among the staff members who serve at Buddhist ceremonies. When two or more dancers perform a dance and there are several or more staff members in addition to the chief priest, a rank is assigned to each person, and they are called "ichi-san," "ni-san," "san-san," and so on, from highest to lowest.

仕官人の年功を数える語で，最長老を一﨟という。六位蔵人の首席，鎌倉幕府の当番人の筆頭などを一﨟と呼んだが，転じて年功を積んで長老となった者をさす(たとえば，〈大人（おとな）〉の項目を参照)。　芸能の分野では，雅楽の舞楽や東遊（あずまあそび）などの舞人（まいにん），それに仏教の法会に出仕する職衆（しきしゆう）の中で，もっとも上位の役をいう。2人以上の舞人が奏舞し，また，導師以外に数人あるいはそれ以上の職衆が出仕する場合には，1人ずつの序列が決められ，上位から順に一﨟，二﨟，三﨟，……と称する。
