Welty - Eudora Welty

Welty - Eudora Welty

American female novelist. Born in Jackson, Mississippi. After studying advertising at Columbia University, she returned to her hometown and has lived there ever since. Many of her works are set on the Old Natchez Road, which runs from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee, and she is known as a regional writer for depicting the past and present of the South, and is compared to Faulkner. Her first short story, Death of a Salesman, was published in 1936 and was praised, marking her start as a short story writer. Many of her early short stories have a fantastical atmosphere. Her main novels include A Delta Wedding (1946), The Ponders (1954), which won the Howells Prize, The Losing Battle (1970), and The Optimist's Daughter (1972), which won the Pulitzer Prize. She captures the mysteries of human life in the small events of everyday life and depicts the power of love to restore human relationships in richly shaded prose. In 1971, he published a collection of photographs he had taken in Mississippi in the 1930s, and in 1980, a complete collection of his short stories was published.
