This vaccination center opened on May 7, 1858 (Ansei 5) in Matsueda-cho, Otamagaike, Kanda. Planning for its establishment began in the fourth year of the same year, led by Otsuki Shunsai, Ito Genpaku, and others, and the Finance Magistrate Kawaji Seimo applied to the Edo Shogunate for permission to use the land, which was granted. Funds for construction and operation were solicited from Dutch-style medicine physicians living in Edo and the surrounding areas, and 83 people responded. However, in November of the fifth year of the same year, the center was destroyed by a major fire, so the following year it was reopened on land adjacent to Ito Genpaku's house on Izumibashi-dori in Shitaya. It later came under the direct control of the Shogunate and was renamed the Western Medicine Center.

安政5 (1858) 年5月7日，神田お玉ヶ池松枝町に開設された種痘所。設立の計画は大槻俊斎，伊東玄朴らを中心に同4年から始り，勘定奉行川路聖謨が拝領地の使用を江戸幕府に願い出て許可された。建築および運用の資金は，江戸および近郷在住の蘭方医に醵金を呼びかけ，83名がそれに応じた。しかし，同5年 11月，大火で類焼したので，翌年下谷和泉橋通の伊東玄朴宅の隣接地に再開された。これがのちに幕府の直轄となり，西洋医学所と改称された。
